Surfboards...

This is one to avoid!
If you are buying a second-hand board, look for signs that it has been looked after and valued. Yellowing areas around minor punctures in the glass indicate that the water has penetrated. Check the deck of the board for compression bumps, where the riders knees, feet etc have dented the foam and the foam and glass have separated. Tap it gently to see if there are any voids. Check for a loose fin that might have been knocked. Examine the nose and tail, and also the leash attachment point. Lots of boards are stolen every year. Why? To sell on, so don't get suckered. Is the seller someone you know, or at least could you find him again? Don't buy anything from off the street.

Wetsuits...

It might sound obvious, but try it on before you buy. Examine the seams for loose frayed stitching or opening seams. The knee areas are very susceptible to wear. Does the zip slide freely? Is the neoprene itself nice and soft, or is it stiff and creased. Look at the nylon lining, has it separated from the neoprene anywhere? Turn the suit inside-out to check both sides. Does it smell bad? If so, its probably been neglected and not washed in fresh water after use.

Vehicles...

All ready to go!
All the usual rules for buying a used vehicle apply. Check the bona fides of the seller. Is he a dealer? Is it his to sell? Has it been 'clocked'? Don't buy it when it is dark! Get the AA or RAC to check it out, or at least get a mechanically-oriented friend to give it the once-over before you buy. You will need to see the service history and the registration documents, and MOT certificate if it needs one.
